Background of the Study
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are critical drivers of economic growth in Yauri Local Government Area (LGA). These businesses face numerous challenges, particularly in managing their costs efficiently. One of the most significant challenges is cost allocation, the process of assigning indirect costs (overheads) to different departments or products. Effective cost allocation is essential for determining the true cost of products and services, pricing decisions, and overall financial sustainability (Drury, 2013).
In Yauri LGA, SMEs often lack the formal financial systems and expertise needed to allocate costs accurately. The absence of proper cost allocation practices can lead to inefficient resource use, poor pricing strategies, and diminished profitability. This study will explore the challenges SMEs in Yauri LGA face in cost allocation and examine the impact of these challenges on their financial performance.
Statement of the Problem
SMEs in Yauri LGA face difficulties in allocating costs effectively, which hampers their ability to make informed financial decisions. Without proper cost allocation, these businesses are at risk of underpricing their products, mismanaging their resources, and ultimately jeopardizing their sustainability. This study aims to explore the specific challenges SMEs face in cost allocation and provide recommendations for improving these practices.
